Each pre-programmed scenario is 1.5 clock hours. Morning or Afternoon blocks include 2 scenarios. Please choose which one(s) you are requesting:
Med-Surg Adult Scenarios
ACUTE PANCREATITIS
Skills Needed: assessment, complete admission database, NGT placement, IV medication admin, knowledge of pancreatitis, alcohol withdrawal, therapeutic communication with uncooperative patient. Leadership: prioritize and manage care.
GERIATRIC HIP FRACTURE
Skills Needed: for beginning students in nursing and/or PT, knowledge of hip fracture, hip replacement surgery, administration of PO medications, option for SQ and IV medication admin. Neurovascular and post-operative assessment, knowledge of UTI s/s, in/out catheter, and option for bladder scan.
Leadership: prioritize and manage care.
PNEUMOTHORAX
Skills Needed: assessment, nebulizer administration, chest tube assessment, SQ, PO and/or IV medication administration, use of variety of oxygen delivery devices, knowledge of pneumothroax & tension pneumo and chest tube insertion procedue, pharmocologic and non-pharmocologic treatments for pain, recognition of patient decline.
Leadership: prioritize and manage care.
COPD
Skills Needed: knowledge of COPD, administration of a variety of medications: nebulizer, secondary antibiotics, SQ insulin, PO medications, IV push. Application of various oxygen delivery devices. Leadership: prioritize and manage care.
DIABETES TYPE II
Skills Needed: knowledge of DM2 and insulin, insulin administration, UTI, clean catch specimen, insulin pen use. High emphasis on patient education and communication.
Leadership: prioritize and manage care.
GERIATRIC PNEUMONIA
Skills Needed: knowledge of pneumonia. assessment, obtaining sputum sample, administering po, subcutaneous, and flash or po medications, application of oxygen delivery devices, ADLs. Leadership: proriotize and manage care.
PRE-OP MASTECTOMY
Skills Needed: knowledge of pre-op procedures, education r/t mastectomy and basic knowledge of breast cancer, IV placement & medication administration, therapeutic communication. Leadership: priortize and manage care.
Med-Surg Complex/Critical Care Adult Scenarios
ACUTE CORONARY SYNDROME
Skills Needed: (for higher level students) knowledge of ACS, MI, American Heart Association guidelines for recognition and treatment of STEMI, IV start, indication and mechanism of action of medications, 12-lead EKG placement(expectation=recognition of VTAC, VFIB, Asystole, STEMI, NOT full 12-lead interpretation). Demonstration of basic life support skills(AHA guidelines).Recognition of patient decline and prompt notification of emergency response team. Student group will act as code team as each student takes turns as team leader with faculty prompting. Leadership: prioritize and manage care.
HEART FAILURE
Skills Needed (for higher level students): knowledge of heart failure, assessment, PO, IV medications, including IV secondary medications(potassium infusion). Dysrhythmia interpretation. Analyze laboratory data, interpret new provider orders to prioritize medication administration and treatments(indwelling urinary catheter insertion).
Leadership: prioritize and manage care.
SPINAL CORD INJURY W PARALYSIS
Skills Needed (for higher level students): neuro & pain assessment, post-operative assesment(just returned from PACU), basic knowledge of PCA medication infusion, PCA already set up at beginning of scenario, ETCO2 monitoring, IV med administration, use of BVM, oxygen delivery devices, knowledge of opiod overdose and treatment, SCI pathophysiology. Therapeutic communication with young, college-aged female following traumatic injury and life-changing diagnosis.
Leadership: prioritize and manage care.
ACUTE ISCHEMIC STROKE
Skills Needed: (for higher level students) knowledge of stroke care per American Stroke Association and American Heart Association guidelines during initial presentation to emergency department. Recognize right versus left sided stroke symptoms and implications for nursing care. Neuro assessment, dysrhythmia interpretation, IV medication administration. Basic introductory knowledge to NIH stroke scale(students will complete NIH stroke scale during scenario. Therapeutic communication with distraught older male patient.

POST-OP APPENDECTOMY
Skills Needed (for higher level students): post-operative assessment, NGT placement, IV medication admin, JP drain care and maintenance,open abdmonial wound care, DVT assessment, interpretation of laboratory results, knowledge of appendicitis, post op complications, IV fluid administration

HEMOTHORAX from STAB WOUND
Skills Needed (for higher level students): assessment, blood transfusion, interpretation of laboratory results, chest tube care and maintenance, IV pain medication admin, knowledge of hemothroax

Pediatric Scenarios
POST-OP APPENDECTOMY
Skills Needed: pediatric assessment, NGT management, pediatric med administration, pediatric pain assessment, IV line management, IVP and IV secondary medications, JP drain, knowledge of pediatric appendicitis.
Leadership: prioritize and manage care.
TIB/FIB FRACTURE
Skills Needed: pre-operative assessment, option for IV start, PO and/or IV medication administration. Neurovascular assessment and recognition of compartment syndrome vs. neurovascular compromise. Knowledge of orthopedic splint devices.
Leadership: prioritize and manage care.
SICKLE CELL CRISIS
Skills Needed (for higher level students): pediatric pain assessment, blood transfusion, IV med administration, knowledge of sickle cell, sickle cell crisis.
Leadership: prioritize and manage care.
ASTHMA
Skills Needed: pediatric assessment, administration of nebulizer, administration of medication, uses MDI spacer and peak flow meter, knowledge r/t pediatric asthma. Healthcare provider order interpretation.
Leadership: prioritize and manage care.
DIABETES TYPE I
Skills Needed (for higher level students): patient in emergency department, initial assessment, healthcare provider order interpretation and prioritization of order implementation including calculation of IV bolus infusion. Includes planning for IV insulin and maintenance fluid administration. Use of glucometer, interpretation of laboratory data. Pathophysiology of DKA.
Leadership: prioritize and manage care.
BRONCHIOLITIS
Skills Needed: Nasal suctioning, assessment, PO medication administration, respiratory specimen collection, communication, patient education of care giver. PPE application, isolation precautions.
Leadership: prioritize and manage care.
OB Scenarios
ENDOMETRITIS
Skills Needed: knowledge of endometritis and post-partum assessment of c-section, insertion and management of foley. Obtaining UA from foley. Interpretation of lab values, administer IM medication, reconstitution of medication.
Leadership: prioritize and manage care.
TERM NEWBORN
Skills Needed: newborn assessment, administer IM and eye medications, glucometer, heel stick, knowledge of newborn milestones and anticipated complications., suctioning of infant, treatment of hypoglycemia in newborn.
Leadership: prioritize and manage care.
LABOR ADMISSION
Skills Needed: knowledge of labor process, interpretation of fetal heart rate monitor, cervical checks for dilation and effacement, communication with challenging patient, IVP medications. Leadership: prioritize and manage care.
POSTPARTUM COMPLICATION
Skills Needed (requires knowledge of ACOG's obstetric hemorrhage bundle): knowledge of post partum assessment, post partum complications with emphasis on PPH management, IV medication administration, IV fluid administration, urinary catheterization. knowledge of how to quanitify obstetric blood loss

POSTPARTUM ASSESSMENT
Skills Needed: knowledge of post-partum assessment and post-partum compications, I/O cath, administration of rhogam and MMR vaccine, breatfeeding, and newborn safety.

PREECLAMPSIA
Skills Needed (requires knowledg of ACOG's severe hypertension in pregnancy bundle): Knowledge of labor assessment, preeclampsia and interventions for preeclampsia, IV fluid administration, and IVP medication administration. Complex skill alert: magnesium infusion.
