Tartan Tails Training and Time Commitment

The in-person interview and assessment may take up to two (2) hours. If chosen, participation in one/two weekly training sessions is expected. The number of weeks of required training may vary by cohort and range from ten (10) to twenty (20) weeks. Training dates and times will be determined based on trainer availability and will likely occur in the evening and/or on weekends.

The goal is for each selected team to successfully complete training. In some instances, there may be a circumstance, trait, behavior or action that inhibits the dog/team from completing training. Such decisions will be led by the trainer in consultation with the Tartan Tails leadership. Additional training opportunities may be offered as appropriate or needed and at the discretional of the trainer. Participation in additional training opportunities is strongly encouraged, but not required.

Selected teams that successfully complete training and certification agree to a minimum of three (3) years of participation with Tartan Tails, contingent upon annual evaluation. Teams will provide a minimum of eight (8) hours of service through scheduled events per semester. For employees, the appropriate leave with supervisor/department head approval must be utilized for Tartan Tails activities during regular working hours. Community service, annual, compensatory and personal leave may be used in connection to Tartan Tails participation.

Participant Financial Commitment

Participation in the Tartan Tails program does include a financial commitment per animal. The financial commitment is subject to annual adjustment. The current commitment (costs noted are approximations) includes animal veterinary expenses including an annual physical exam, vaccinations (including Bordetella) deworming and/or other requirement(s) based upon breed, health of animal and/or licensed veterinarian recommendation. If your animal has received its annual physical exam, including the required vaccinations within the previous six (6) months of your application/acceptance into the program, documentation from the licensed veterinarian will be acceptable.

Other expenses include flea/tick preventative and heartworm preventative (monthly or another regular schedule based on product and/or licensed veterinarian recommendation), wellness care as necessary or appropriate or recommended by licensed veterinarian, Pet Partners Handler Course - $80.00, and Pet Partners Registration and renewal every two years - $95.00.

It is the owner’s responsibility to maintain the certification of the animals previously trained, tested and certified through approved pet therapy programs and selected for Tartan Tails participation.

For those with a financial hardship, scholarships may be available and you are encouraged to inquire with the Tartan Tails Coordination Team. Be aware that scholarships are not available to cover expenses related to veterinary care, well or annual visits, vaccinations and/or preventative care (e.g. flea & tick, heartworm, etc.) or costs associated with certification renewal if an exemption from Tartan Tails training and certification was provided.
